Ryan is a young engineer who just
completed a degree in an engineering college in the year 2000. After an
engineering degree, his struggle started with searching for a job in a good
company. For six months, he applied for all the best companies in his country.
But he was not at all getting any feedback. After six months, there was a
disastrous slowdown started in the industrial sector. Many big companies were
declared bankrupt. Many companies had decided to lay off an ample number of
employees. Now he was facing competition from experienced employees rather than
fresher like him. Companies prefer professional people rather than newer ones.
So his task became tough to search for a job.
His routine was to find out a newspaper and search for
job opportunities. He had not even got shortlisted for an interview in most of
the cases. Frustration had started taking over his head. For hours, he used to
sit on a riverbank and think about what would be his future.
It was his birthday. But he was so nervous that he
woke up early morning and randomly entered any local transport bus and kept on
moving from one place to other. He was in depression and was thinking that if
anything good would ever happen to his life. It was not that he was alone in
his life. He had parents and relatives to guide him and friends to support him.
But still, he was feeling lonely. When there are expectations from you, and you
fail in these expectations, life becomes difficult. He was getting ashamed of
himself for his failures.
But sometimes fortune plays a big part. Unexpectedly,
a friend called him up and asked if he would be interested in a job at his
friend's company. Without wasting a minute, he replied to him with a big
"Yes."
His boss was Milton, a very young but intelligent man.
Very soon, Ryan got settled in his company. Even though the salary was
significantly less, this job had enhanced his confidence.
But the problem with Milton as he was not very serious
about work, so many projects started suffering and crossed the due dates.
Milton was busy in his personal life and was not looking at his business as his
prime responsibility.
Even though Ryan and two of his colleagues had worked
very hard for the company to perform, his company started losing many customer
orders. The best example of this was overconfidence. Only intelligence cannot
give you success; hard work and integrity are equally important.
Milton had started giving many excuses for delay in
orders, no response to customers, and false commitment to getting orders,
resulting in a reduction in the overall business.
While Ryan and his colleagues were not getting their
salaries on time, they were also blamed for customers going away from the
company. Even though the fact was, ongoing customers kept business with
Milton's company looking at hard work and their integrity with the company.
Now Ryan and his colleagues started searching for new
jobs.
Very soon, he got a new job. Ryan gave his
resignation. Milton tried to stop him and said that he would increase his
salary. But Ryan was aware of his commitments. Ryan asked Milton to clear his
unpaid salary for the last three months. Agreeably, Milton gave a cheque with
that amount.
But, the bank did not clear the cheque payment as
there was no money in the account. Consequently, Ryan got very angry. He just
entered the office and picked up a laser printer machine and a desktop with its
CPU with the help of his one friends. Milton was not in the office.
When Milton got to know this, he called up Ryan and
said he would call the Police and lodge an FIR for stolen things from his
office. But Ryan replied to him very confidently, "Milton, remember that I
have a reason for my actions. But if I report to Police about the bounced
cheque from the bank, you will even not get bail from the Police after imprisonment."
Looking at Ryan's confidence, Milton agreed to pay his
unpaid salary. Now Ryan asked him to meet him in a restaurant as there would be
CCTV cameras for safety.
Milton came and paid him a salary in full. Finally,
Ryan paid back his things from the office.
Ryan said, "Milton, always remember, integrity is
the key to success and not finesse."
